Chapter 5: I'm Gonna Need A Minute

Are you on a journey to better health, joy, and food freedom with a deep desire to put Jesus at the center of it all? Julia Fikse, the host of the Dear Food Podcast, is here to guide you through the ups and downs of your transformation with faith and determination. In this episode, Julia shares valuable insights and heartwarming stories that will inspire you on your path to a healthier, more faith-filled life.

In the latest episode of the Dear Food Podcast, host Julia Fikse delves into the powerful concept of the "Power Pause." This episode, titled "I'm Gonna Need A Minute," is a must-listen for anyone who struggles with compulsive eating, emotional eating, or binge eating. Julia offers practical tips and spiritual insights to help you regain control over your eating habits.

What is the Power Pause?
Julia begins by drawing an analogy to the knee-jerk reaction we've all experienced at the doctor's office. When the doctor taps just below your kneecap, your leg jerks in response. This reflexive action is an involuntary response to an external stimulus.

Similarly, in our relationship with food, we often have what Julia terms a "food-jerk reaction." When life's challenges hit us like a hammer, we impulsively turn to food without engaging our brains. It could be a headache, hunger pangs, sugar cravings, stress, disappointment, or any other trigger. These "life hammers" can come in various forms, and we respond by eating to numb the pain.

The Power Pause: Taking Back Control:
The key to breaking free from this cycle is the Power Pause. Julia outlines the 10 simple steps of the Power Pause to help you engage your brain before eating and seek wisdom from God:

1. Stop: Interrupt your eating.

2. Breathe: Take a deep breath.

3. Separate: Walk away from the food.

4. Pray: Ask God for wisdom and understanding.

5. Praise: Thank God for His love and care.

6. Wait: Wait on the Lord (Isaiah 40:31).

7. Listen: Listen for the Lord's guidance.

8. Divert: If needed, divert your attention for five minutes.

9. Choose: Make a wise, intentional food decision.

10. Follow Through: Stick to your choice.

Growing Your "Power Pause" Muscle:
Julia emphasizes that the Power Pause is like a muscle that needs to be exercised and strengthened. Initially, you might only remember to pause after you've started eating, but even that is a victory. With practice, you'll remember to engage your brain and pause before you eat.

The ultimate goal is to increase the time between the life hammer hitting you and the moment you make a wise eating decision. During this pause, you'll become aware of why you're eating and what, if anything, you should eat. The Power Pause helps you transition from reacting to life's challenges to responding with intention.

Seeking Divine Guidance:
Throughout the episode, Julia emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from God through prayer. Waiting on the Lord and listening for His leading can make a significant difference in your food choices. Remember, God promises to provide a way out of temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13).

How to Implement the Power Pause:
Julia suggests practical ways to remember to pause, such as using visual cues like Power Pause Squares or downloading helpful resources from OneStepToWellness.com. Additionally, she reminds listeners that the Holy Spirit is there to help and remind us to pause. Just ask for His guidance.

Conclusion:
The Power Pause is a transformative tool to regain control over your eating decisions. By engaging your brain, seeking divine guidance, and making intentional food choices, you can break free from compulsive eating and embark on a journey to lasting health and joy. Join the Dear Food family, and remember that you are not alone on this path to food freedom.
